It’s safe to say that Made Portraits is one of the leading Somerset Creative Family Portraits studios and today, we’re going to take you behind the scenes of how one of our most well known images was MADE.

Obviously the more simple family portraits are still really popular but sometimes something a little more quirky can tell much more of a story. When I created my aeroplane photo of my family, it captured a specific time in our lives when my daughter Grace was always wanting me to do aeroplane to her. It was daily! The concept of the shot was that I traded in my air miles and had the favour repaid so it was taking a simple idea of me holding her up on my feet and reversing it. The simple way of her being on my feet would have told the story but hopefully you’d agree that this is a far more fun way to present it.

With any composite I produce, I always have to be able to visualise the end result before I even begin. This allows me to ensure that I capture all the elements before I sit down at my computer to put them altogether.

First of all, I take a picture of the sofa on it’s own to give me access to all the areas of the sofa and floor whilst they’re all tidy. No boxes shoes or anything in the way.

Once that’s done, I move on to capturing the people and will do that in order of simplicity. With this shot, it was going to be the first in a series of images cataloguing my wife as she went through her pregnancy. With that in mind, I wanted her positioned side on so she could be in the same position throughout with only my daughter and I changing what we were doing.

The next stage was to capture my daughter with me on top of her feet. This involved taking a picture of her for her face and body and another for her legs holding me.

The final part was to capture me doing my aeroplane. As you can see, this wasn’t the most technical part. It involved stacking cases I had in the studio up as high as I could safely get them and then use as much core strength as I could getting up in the air. I’m not going to lie, it took several attempts but I was pleased with how I did in the end.

I finally took what I call a safety shot for the front of my shirt just in case I needed a couple of buttons or something.
