Back in January, I was truly delighted to introduce a new package at the specifically designed to capture Newborn Baby Portraits. At the time of launching, I didn’t mention that the main reason I chose to introduce this package was because my wife is pregnant with our second child who is due in August. Obviously a selfish reason to want to move in to this area but that was why and it’s an area I am really enjoying working within.

When my daughter Grace was born in 2010, I hadn’t opened Made Portraits and this style of session wasn’t particularly common so we don’t have a really great newborn image. Don’t get me wrong we have photos. We have A LOT of photos as most first time parents! We have photos that are lovely but in terms of a truly striking professional newborn picture on display in the house, there isn’t anything and that is a real shame.

To do this style of session, I invested in loads of different bits including blankets, wraps, nests and various other accessories to allow me to produce stunning images of any newborn. I continue to add to this month after month. This allows me to cater the overall look of the images to suit a client’s own décor, which is great.

The newborn package is designed specifically for babies within the first couple of weeks since birth. I book around 4 hours in the studio to allow plenty of time to settle any child and to ensure there is a variety of images for parents to choose from. The shoot takes place at my studio with sofas for mum to settle on and put her feet up and it’s also cosy and warm to help keep babies sleeping throughout.

I wanted to share a session with you so you can not only get a sense of style but also the sort of choice and variety you actually get from a newborn experience. Below is a session I did last month of Baby Connie who was driven to the studio all the way from Windsor and I was delighted to welcome her in. Because I was lucky enough to photograph her parents wedding in 2013, this session meant even more to me than normal.

Caroline and Tom are a truly delightful couple that are obviously the best of friends so I know Connie is blessed to have them as her parents.

When they came in, we spent around 3.5 hours capturing Connie and settling her back down when we needed to. We managed to create a large amount of variety through the use of the various blankets, wraps and accessories and the results were perfect. Caroline and Tom had their viewing a few days later and were shown around 40 different images. Seeing such beautiful images of your baby can be really emotional and a little overwhelming so they were encouraged to take some time to chat things through and really think about what they wanted to do with their images. They decided a few days later to go with all their images as High Resolution Digital Files which has given them a great deal of freedom and flexibility to print them off as they want, when they want as often as they want.

When parents book a newborn session, it’s because they know that babies change so quickly and so these types of sessions really do produce images that you can cherish for years to come.
